Togue is considered an invasive species by the state in Sebago Lake and the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife promotes their removal to help the landlocked salmon that compete for the same food.
Each year derby organizers have asked registered fishermen to donate their extra togue caught during the derby which is delivered to Nova Seafood in Portland to be processed, flash frozen then delivered to Preble Street food pantry to be made into meals. A special drawing is held for those togue with over 3,000 lbs of fish donated over the last few years. The derby was created in 2001 to help in the removal of togue from Sebago Lake and this process of collecting the extra fish and donating it has been beneficial not only to the removal of invasive fish contributing to a healthy lake, but also donated to feed the hungry.
One of this year’s beneficiaries will be the Feed the Need, 13 local food pantries in the Sebago Lake Region. If you would like to donate to Feed the Need go to: sebagolakeschamber.com
